The Meaning of Baptism
Baptism is a joyful and meaningful act of obedience through which a follower of Jesus Christ publicly declares faith in Him. It does not save, but it powerfully portrays the saving work God has already accomplished in the heart—resurrecting a once spiritually dead person to new life gracious given by the Spirit of God that has resulted in repentance and faith toward Jesus Christ. In baptism, believers identify with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection and are publicly recognized by the church as united to Christ and to His people. Baptism is both a personal confession of faith and a communal celebration, marking the beginning of a life of discipleship lived within the body of the local church.
What We Believe About Baptism
1. Is the first step of discipleship following a credible profession of repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.
2. Is an act of obedience to the direct command of the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. Is the God-ordained means by which believers make an initial and public profession of their faith in Christ.
4. Is an outward sign of the inward reality of new spiritual life brought about by the Holy Spirit.
5. Is a visible symbol of a believer’s identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
6. Is the rite through which the church formally recognizes an individual’s union with Christ and His body.
7. Is both a personal confession and a corporate affirmation, as the believer publicly proclaims faith and the church affirms that profession.
8. Is administered by full immersion in water, as this best reflects the biblical meaning of baptism.
9. Is practiced in the presence of the local church, which assumes responsibility for the believer’s ongoing discipleship.
10. Is connected to church membership and is required of all who seek membership in the local church.
